STORAGE TIPS
At Piedmont Mini Storage, maximizing the benefits of your storage unit is easy with a few smart strategies.
Do:
- Elevate your items off the floor using pallets, 2x4s, or plywood.
- Plan your unit layout to maximize space and leave a central aisle for easy access to the back.
- Use freestanding shelves to stay organized.
- Label boxes on all sides and keep a reference list for quick access. Fill boxes without making them too heavy, placing heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Store frequently used items near the front for convenience.
- Protect belongings with moving pads, sheets, or light blankets.
- Check your unit at least once a month.
- Disassemble large furniture (tables, bed frames) and wrap and label all pieces. Store hardware in labeled bags.
- When storing electronics with multiple cords, use colored stickers on cords and corresponding ports. Use original boxes if available.
- Clean and dry all appliances before storing; leave doors slightly ajar to prevent mildew.
- Store couches on end, stack chairs seat-to-seat, and use drawers or appliances to store smaller items. Place paper pads between stacked furniture to prevent scratches.
- Store mattresses and box springs on their sides, wrapped for protection, elevated off the floor on 2-3 short 2x4s.
- Store mirrors and paintings upright, not flat. Pack books flat to protect spines.
- Apply a light coat of machine oil to metal tools, bicycles, and equipment to prevent rust. Clean and drain equipment before storing.
- Wrap breakables with bubble wrap or unprinted paper, tape after wrapping, and group similar items together.
- Store clothing and draperies in wardrobe boxes on hangers to maintain shape.
- Purchase storage insurance for valuable belongings.
- Use stackable Rubbermaid containers with tight lids for added protection; store valuable items toward the back of the unit.
- Keep out-of-season clothing easily accessible for longer-term storage.
- Stay aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the manager.
Don’t:
- Do not cover items with plastic—it traps moisture.
- Do not store food to avoid attracting pests.
- Do not overpack boxes; ensure they are manageable to lift.
- Do not assume homeowners' or renters' insurance covers items in storage—purchase storage insurance.
- Do not share your gate code or password with unauthorized persons.
- Do not use a printed newspaper for wrapping; the ink may smudge.
- Do not forget to clean appliances before storing.
- Do not store toxins, flammables, or hazardous materials such as paint, oil, or gasoline.
